Emotions of Life – A monochromatic documentary by Santanu Dey.

About Santanu Dey :

Myself Santanu Dey, an Accountant & Logistics Manager by profession and street, people & documentary photographer by passion.

Since 2016 photography has a huge influence in my life & all it started with a very interesting but an insulting incident. As I didn’t have any camera in my earlier days, I used to explore things with my mobile. In my initial days, due to lack of knowledge about different genres of photography, I usually shot things which were possible to shoot with mobile (e.g. still life, abstract etc.). Slowly after progressing I found my real interest in street & documentary photography. Couple of year’s back I bought my first DSLR & started shooting on the street on a regular basis. My works have been published & featured in quite a few forums and magazines.

“Emotions of life”

Emotions are universal & Emotions are truth.

In photography, one thing that makes a great photo is its ability to convey emotion. Emotion in a photograph or any work of art is what helps a viewer to connect with a piece if that emotion is prevalent in the viewer. I think we can all agree that in order to be successful, a photograph needs to connect with its viewers on an emotional level. That emotion could be awe, desire, sadness, longing, or any number of the plethora of human emotions, but there needs to be an emotion.

This is one of the most powerful, yet difficult, an element to create a good photograph is capturing emotion and feeling. A really good image is one that conveys a mood and pulls the viewer into the scene. If a photo tells a story and tugs at the heartstrings, it’s more or less successful.

Of course, there are lots of other elements that play vital roles to create a frame but without feelings and emotion you will not be able to convey a story nor to create certain moods in your photos.

In our life every bit of a moment is a canvas in which we draw some incidents to fill it. There is no such blank canvas in our life. To fill our canvas we need incidents full of emotions & feelings as without these nothing can be drawn. We, the photographers are the bunch of people who capture those emotions to make them a “Memory of Lifetime”.

Photographing people doing something they love, or going about their daily lives, or to photograph nature / animals / abstract world the word “Emotion” is widely spread from each corner to another corner of a frame to tell a story. If there is no story there is no emotion & if there is no emotion, there is no such good photograph.

In conclusion & in my point of view life is full of chapters with lots of frames filled with different emotions. Humans are the elements only to witness those and we, the photographers are to freeze them to make the moment “Forever Young”. Requirements are a lot, demands are a lot but without emotion everything seems very much less.

Here, I present some of my images which I think are filled with emotion & feelings and requesting all of you to please go through with them to narrate an emotion along with story & feelings.

My thoughts :

The emotion, the everlasting drama, the changing sequence, the light & shadow, the people, the moment all these are the things which attract me to shoot street & documentary photography.

I highly believe as Robert Doisneau, the famous French photographer once told “The marvels of daily life are exciting, no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street.”

For me, the ability to capture an image of someone instantly is an incredible privilege. We, as street & documentary photographers, need to be careful not to abuse it. By making yourself aware of local laws and customs and making mindful photography, you can make sure that you minimize any interference with others’ privacy and feel confident and comfortable enough to realize your creative potential.
