What brought you into fashion photography?

While we were posted in Vizag, I met a photographer for a portfolio of my own. He made me look beautiful as from the pages of glossy magazine. He is well known experienced Fashion photographer Mr. B.K. Agarwal.
After my own impressive portfolio, I attended his classes to learn the art and also assisted him in his studio shoots, learning the intricacies of photography and the trade was so interesting that from being a model I picked up a camera and became a photographer myself. Then there was no turning back.
We got posted to Goa and I set up a studio of my own.

What are the pros and cons of being a fashion photographer?

I am always with a positive outlook and I will talk of pros of being a fashion photographer…

You have to learn the basics of photography very well, the rules you can break to picture your creativity can be done only if you are well aware of the rules to follow. If you keep yourself updated with the latest fashion trend and yet be unique you can make your mark easily.
In fashion we not only photograph models and high fashion, we also shoot families and jewellery and many other fashion products too.

Every profession has its cons, so in this it is required to be always updated with the latest trend not only with your equipment, also with your knowledge and it comes with a price and always keep your best foot forward.

What is the scope of fashion photography as a career in India?

Oh yes, there is lot of demand for fashion photographers in India. Today it’s a virtual world and we create a window of each and every aspect of our lives and things we use, be it garments, furniture, house, clothes, jewellery, food, cosmetics, anything we need to live is in showcase window in front of our eyes and to present it well you do need to create a charming picture to convince your soul and thus fashion photographers are never out of work.

Any special photograph close to your heart?

That’s a difficult question to answer … there are many such photos close to heart because of different reason.

The picture by the title ” MYSTIC TWIST ” is special because of the first award I had received which was a beautiful digital work.

Then as I progressed further with my assignments and also received parallel recognition as an artist and receiving the coveted distinctions from FIP and FIAP. There were many such beautiful images created afterwards.

“MYSTIC TWIST This photo by Tripti Roy in the year 2011 fetched her the first award of recognition.

Any Photographer you follow on social media?

Yes of course, I admire many and take inspiration from some of their work.

Atul Kasbekar, who’s name is always remembered for Kingfisher Calendar.

Daboo Ratnani the celebrity photographer

Vikram Bawa, Prabuddha Dasgupta,

Kellyschneider from Florida, seen her work on social media.

Nikki Harrison, also seen her work on social media.

I am avid fan of a young photographer Irene Rudnyk from Canada, I love her behind the scene videos, she makes it appear so simple and easy to work with models and camera, learned many things following her.

Your thoughts on photography salon?

Photography Salons, are a great way to give you a push to create inspiring beautiful images. Also you are lauded for the good work which gives immense satisfaction and recognition in the fraternity of an artist.
Before I joined the federation I did not venture into other categories of photography, I was content shooting fashion and portraits ( I mean only people) and sometimes landscapes whenever I travelled to a new place.
But after I was introduced to salon participation and I realized the different categories existed for competition I started clicking nature, birds, dwelled into macro and flowers, tried still life and the list started growing long and I could participate in all the sections of a salon.
As a member of an organisation it definitely helps you to grow in your work of interest.
You get a chance to interact and guided by the seniors.
And because of salons you get to visualize others work.

Did Covid -19 pandemic affected your photography?

Yes, it did, a great deal. As a people’s photographer I had to stop taking assignments, also travelling was not allowed.

Only thing left was to sit at home and attend meeting on webinars and work on your previous pending artwork.

But on second thought it provided some spare time to learn new tools of photoshop and practise them.
