EDITOR’S CHOICE

In today’s episode of Focused | with World Photo Freaks, there are seven photo – stories by six talented photographers which are featured as the Editor’s Choice images.

Here you will get to know little bit about the photographers as well as the photographs itself.

1. Sudhansu Bhusan Sabut

Colours of winter.

Mr. Sudhansu Bhusan Sabut is from Cuttack, Odisha, staying in Varanasi for the last 10 years.

There is a proverb popular here,”Subah-E-Banaras , Shaam – E – Awadh” meaning if you want to feel the morning then come to Banaras and for the evening go to Awadh. If someone wants to experience the beauty of Banaras (Varanasi,Kashi) see the mesmerising beauty of sunrise in Ganga Ghat, experience the calmness and beauty of nature. This shot was clicked by Mr.Sudhansu at the Assi Ghat. He says during winters, the migratory Siberian duck come here in thousands, when you feed them they come towards you in groups. He was on a boat ride in the early morning of 1st week of December when he saw another empty boat and the group of ducks swimming in the water. The fog behind was complimenting the frame so well and that’s when he decided to shoot the photograph. According to Mr. Sudhansu Bhusan Sabut this is the perfect example of colours of winter .

2. Maria Jesus Feria Gomez

Tona’s urban art work.

The Spanish lady photographer, Maria Jesus Feria Gomez talks about her experience at Lagos –

“On October 24/2020, I traveled to Lagos, a beautiful city in southern Portugal, in the Algarve. I wanted to visit that city and mainly take photos of its cliffs and beaches, which are wonderful. However, walking through its streets we discovered a large amount of Urban art that decorated buildings, old walls and houses”.

It was like a large open-air museum.

The photograph you have seen is an art work belonging to an artist named “TONA”; I especially liked it for its expressiveness and simplicity. I don’t know him, but I have looked for some information about him and about the urban art project he is been developing in Lagos.

3. Alan Chan

Persian Students.
Fusion

Mr. Alan Chan a Hong Kong based photographer , has an experience of photography for over 40 years now. He started photography from his early student life . His father was also a photographer who had an old camera with Zeiss lens . Mr. Alan Chan loves to be interactive and he likes to travel a lot for photography. He likes to take landscape and street photography . Whenever he stays in Hong Kong , he like to take portraits with models .

This is what he has to say about the above two photographs :

For the first picture , I took this picture in Iran (erstwhile Persia). In my impression , Iran is a traditional and conservative country , but the people are friendly and kindly , even the rules are tight and strict , they like to contact foreigners in order to know more about the world . I met a lot of students in an old town , I asked them for taking a photo . They gladly accepted with a natural expression and smile . From their eye contact , they showed they yearn for freedom with optimism .

The second picture , I took in Singapore , a culture fusion country in South East Asia . Many beautiful graffiti were distributed on the wall all over the old China town . This graffiti was showing the Cantonese opera , a kind of familiar culture of China . I saw a Muslim girl walking under this graffiti . I thought of the fusion of different cultures who are harmoniously staying together with peace .

4. Arnab Anjan

Childhood.

The moment I saw this photograph, I knew this is definitely going to feature in this blog series.

This beautiful photograph was clicked during the Gajan festival by senior photographer Mr. Arnab Anjan at Gram Bangla, North 24 pargana, West Bengal on 15th April 2018.

Gajan festival also known as the Charak Gajan festival or the Neel utsav is a folk festival held during the last month of Bengali callender – Chaitra , to celebrate the marriage of lord Shiva with Harakali.

In Bengali, the split meaning of Gajan is Ga – meaning village, Jan – meaning the people or the folks. That is, Gajan is the festival of rural folks of Bengal.

During the Gajan festival or the Neel Utsav, people would dress up as Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali to perform street play and tell folk tales.

I chose this photograph authored by Mr. Arnab Anjan, not only because it was beautiful but it also showcased the rural essence of India in true sense.

5. Shritoma Roy Choudhury Kar

The Ipswich Suffolk Harbour.

London based photographer, Shritoma Roy Choudhury Kar was at the Ipswich Suffolk Harbour when she clicked this beautiful photograph at the break of the dawn.

The age old harbour of Ipswich had once been the most important dock at some point in the history of England. Once it had catered trading ships that travelled the world, now it mostly anchors cruise boats and floating cafes.. the crystal clear water has seen it all, lying perfectly still , undulating water , reflecting the town’s landscape like a perfect mirror. How many stories of travel it must be knowing, how many generations it must have seen growing.. how much trade it must have brought.. still standing still, it continues reflecting the ever changing cityscape..

6. Simson Das

The star trail.

This photograph by Mr. Simson Das caught my attention at World Photo Freaks Facebook group page and I immediately selected it for the blog series because it takes a lot of effort, patience, dedication, time and technical expertise to shoot star trails and not everyone can bring out beautiful result like Simson did.

Mr. Simson Das, a very talented and experienced photographer from Silchar, Assam who specilizes in nature photography, decided to shoot star trails. He waited for many days for a clear sky but someday the weather would play a spoil sport or the city lights pollution would be a major hindrance.

It was that chilled winter night of November 2020 when he drove to Borkhola, 40 kilometers away from the city of Silchar where he could finally see a clear night sky full of stars. He secured his camera on to his tripod and shot nearly 170 slow shutter speed images and later stack them together to create his first ever star trail.

World Photo Freaks always recognizes such beautiful works which reflects passion and dedication for photography.
