In conversation with the winner of World Photo Freaks CHAMPION’S STORY CUP November 2020 contest – Mr. ABIR SAHA.

About the championship

World Photo Freaks an exclusive Facebook platform for photographers around the world, held a month long contest named the CHAMPION’S STORY CUP November 2020, where the contestants were challenged with a theme of storytelling through photography.

Many photographers participated with brilliant stories. Some of them were so close to winning whom I have mentioned in my previous blog.

On the basis of his sheer brilliance and active participation, on 30th November 2020, Mr. Abir Saha was declared the champion with 28 photo acceptance points after a hard fought contest. We are happy to publish an online interview with him. Here is what he said after winning the championship:

The identity of Maidan by Abir Saha

Congratulations on winning the WORLD PHOTO FREAKS CHAMPION’S STORY CUP November 2020 contest. Tell us more about yourself Abir. Which is your favorite genre of photography?

A soft bloom in a hard environment by Abir Saha.

What motivated you to participate in this contest?

At first I didn’t know much about this contest. After a few days I started submitting pictures. Honestly, I haven’t participated in the facebook contests so far, but I really liked the subject of the contest and decided to take part in it.

A journey to an unknown by Abir Saha.

What does winning this championship means to you?

It was an awesome experience through out the month. It was too much challenging as there were many outstanding photographaphers. I think I am lucky that I could get the crown.

Peace can not be gained by money, by Abir Saha.

Did you had the belief that you will end up winning this contest given that there were so many other talented photographers competing for the championship?

No, I did not believe that I could win this contest. At the beginning the game was different but day by day it became tougher. Frankly speaking winning or loosing was not a big deal. I just enjoyed the whole contest a lot. It gave me opportunity to learn a lot from many senior photographers. But I am glad that I won this prestigious championship.

Behind the safest place by Abir Saha.

During the contest who’s work did you followed or admired?

It is tough to name a single photographer as there were many. But if one has to be selected then I would go for Nanak Mukherjee sir. I always feel a taste of soil in his stories.

Childhood doesn’t understand rituals by Abir Saha.

Pick up a special photograph which you think as one of your best shots submitted during the contest.

This is also very tough to select. Anyways “Childhood does not understand rituals” – this picture is one of my favourites. It was captured in Nakhoda Masjid,Kolkata in the month of Ramjan. I was wandering there suddenly I saw this kid. He was also doing the same with his elders during prayer. I sat down at a distance and started waching his activity. He also saw the camera in my hand and gave a glance to me. Then I clicked this image. His simplicity and innocence of childhood gave a boundless pleasure. That day I got proof once again that kids are sacred like water.

Who is your inspiration behind taking up photography?

Abir Saha’s school teacher Mr. Chanchal Sinha.

When I was in school there was a teacher named Chanchal Sinha sir. He used to bring his camera in school very often and after the school, he use to go to a big garden which was just beside our school and use to click beautiful pictures of birds, flowers and butterflies.  From that time there was an indomitable desire to take pictures like sir. So I consider Sir as my 1st inspiration in this field. Now a days Sir lives in Garbetha, west midnapur so it is my misfortune that when I started photography he shifted back to Garbetha from here.
