Today’s photo-story is about the great Maidan, one of the major landmarks of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, India.

The Maidan also known as Brigade Parade Ground, (Garh er Math in Bengali meaning the ground of the fort) the largest urban park in the city of Kolkata. It is a great stretch of land mainly belonging to the eastern zone command of the Indian defence base at Fort William. The Maidan is dotted with statues and architectural works, the most notable being the Victoria Memorial and the Octerlony monument also known as the Shaheed Minar. It is a historical and cultural center of Kolkata as well as a center of leisure and entertainment for the people of Kolkata. It also includes the Kolkata Race Course.

Maidan hosts a number of football and cricket stadiums, the most noticeable are the Mohun Bagan, the East Bengal football club and the third largest cricket stadium in the world – the Eden Gardens.

Maidan is also good for morning walks, family outings, dates for couples, tonga rides and leisure activities. One can enjoy the iconic Tram ride through the Maidan.
